How to read these rankings
Every ranking on this page is built from one source — USDA's FoodData Central Standard Reference Legacy and Foundation Foods databases — and one normalisation rule (per 100 g edible portion). That makes every food directly comparable: a strawberry, a sirloin steak, and a black bean are all reported on the same denominator.
We exclude branded and processed entries (the ~1.98 M Branded Foods sub-database) from rankings. Manufacturer-submitted label values are useful when you scan a barcode in the grocery aisle, but they're inconsistent across brands and reformulate without notice. Rankings work best when the underlying data is laboratory-analysed.
The five rankings above answer five different questions. Highest Protein answers "where is the protein density?" — useful when you've already accepted the calorie cost. Lowest Calorie answers "what can I eat a lot of?" — volumetric eating for satiety. Keto-friendly answers "what foods clear the <5 g net-carb cutoff?" then ranks by protein. Highest Fiber surfaces digestive- and cardiovascular-supporting foods. Best Protein-to-Calorie Ratio normalises protein against calories, which matters in lean phases or for budget-protein meal planning.
Why “per 100 g” not per serving
Per-serving sizes vary across food types. A 30 g almond serving and a 240 g milk serving are not directly comparable on protein. Per 100 g normalisation is the convention USDA uses internally and what every nutritional reference (CDC, NIH, the FDA Daily Reference Values, the World Health Organization) reports. Each food's individual page shows both the per-100 g value and a per-serving figure that mirrors the FDA Nutrition Facts label panel, so once you've narrowed your shortlist using a ranking, the detail page handles the consumer-facing translation.
What rankings do not measure
Rankings are nutrient-density tools, not all-in dietary advice. A food can be the top entry on protein and still bring sodium, saturated fat, mercury, or other concerns that a single column can't capture. Use rankings the way a registered dietitian uses them — as a shortlist to investigate further. We link each ranked food to its full FDA-format nutrition label so you can vet macros, micronutrients, and Daily Values before adopting a routine.
