Categories come from Source: USDA FoodData Central food_category (filtered to groups with ≥1 indexed food). Nutrient rankings are derived from Source: USDA FoodData Central nutrient_definitions. Food price categories come from Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index taxonomy with our own sub-category slugs for URL stability.
The directory exists primarily for search engines, AI citation engines, and users mapping the full site surface — human readers typically want Browse or Topics for a curated entry rather than this flat list. Counts are live as of request time and will drift as USDA releases refresh the underlying tables.
What this directory does NOT enumerate: individual foods (2M+ rows, listed per-letter at /browse/foods), brand catalogs (hundreds of thousands, at /brand/), or pairwise comparisons (combinatorial). These are indexed in the XML sitemaps for crawlers and paginated A–Z for humans.
